A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. CHARLES H. BEADY, JR., ON HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS PRESIDENT OF THE PINEY WOODS COUNTRY LIFE SCHOOL.

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles H. Beady, Jr., has dedicated many years of outstanding service as the President of the Piney Woods Country Life School in Piney Woods, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, born in Adel, Georgia, Dr. Beady's family moved to Flint, Michigan, where he graduated from Flint Northwestern High School and was the president of his graduating class; and

WHEREAS, after graduation from high school, Dr. Beady furthered his education at Michigan State University, where he received his undergraduate degree in advertising, his master of arts degree in urban counseling and his doctorate in counselor education; and

WHEREAS, while on leave from his assistant professorship in the School of Education at Morgan State University, Dr. Beady engaged in post-doctoral research at the Johns Hopkins University; and

WHEREAS, later, Dr. Beady became the Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University and Research Affiliate at the Center for Social Organization of Schools at the Johns Hopkins University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Beady has combined his research and expertise in the area of academic motivation with his talents as a professional cartoonist to write, illustrate and produce slide-audio packages and other motivational materials which have been used by students, teachers and parents around the country; and

WHEREAS, in August 1984, Dr. Beady came to the Piney Woods Country Life School and assumed the role of provost until the retirement of President James S. Wade in June of 1985, when he was appointed the school's third president; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Beady believes that a good teacher constitutes one who is knowledgeable and shows love, patience, dedication, resourcefulness and concern; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as President of the Piney Woods Country Life School, Dr. Beady has successfully completed a $3 million capital campaign to renovate and double the size of the school's library; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Beady also has established the school's farm as an "open" classroom and as an integral part of the academic program, he was instrumental in constructing two new girls dormitories and has helped to increase the school's endowment from $17.5 million to $30 million in 15 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Beady has received several awards throughout his successful career such as Michigan State University's 1995 Distinguished Alumni Award and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity's Humanitarian Award in 1996; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Beady has gained national support of many celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Charles Schulz, Morgan Freeman, Denise Graves, Paul Warfield and Yolanda King; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and pay special tribute to such an outstanding leader as Dr. Charles H. Beady, Jr., whose long and distinguished career has enriched the quality of education for students at the Piney Woods Country Life School:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Charles H. Beady, Jr., on his outstanding service as President of the Piney Woods Country Life School and extend to him our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Charles H. Beady, Jr., the Piney Woods Country Life School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
